    Readability Analyzer Guide

Content readability affects not only user experience but also SEO indirectly (time on page, bounce rate, share rate). Learn to use Flesch-Kincaid and other metrics to evaluate and optimize content for your target audience's optimal reading level.

    1) Flesch-Kincaid Score: Standard Metric for Readability

    • Flesch Reading Ease: 0-100 scale, higher score = easier to read (90-100 = elementary, 0-30 = college level).
    • Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: Corresponds to U.S. grade levels, e.g., 8.0 = readable by 8th graders.
    • Calculation: Based on average sentence length and average syllables per word—shorter sentences and simpler words yield higher scores.
    plaintext
    Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 - 1.015 × (words / sentences) - 84.6 × (syllables / words)

    Target recommendations:
    - General content: 70-80 (middle school)
    - Technical docs: 60-70 (high school)
    - Academic papers: 30-50 (college)

    2) Sentence Complexity: Impact of Long Sentences & Passive Voice

Overly long sentences and excessive passive voice reduce readability and may make it harder for AI to extract key information (Featured Snippets, AEO).

    • Average sentence length: Aim for 15-20 words; longer sentences increase cognitive load.
    • Passive voice ratio: Keep below 10%; active voice is more direct and clear.
    • Paragraph length: 3-5 sentences per paragraph; avoid walls of text (especially on mobile).

❌ Passive voice (harder to read):
"The report was completed by the team."

✅ Active voice (easier to read):
    "The team completed the report."

    3) Why Readability Matters for SEO/AEO

While Google hasn't explicitly stated readability is a ranking signal, readable content generates better user signals, indirectly affecting rankings and Featured Snippets selection.

    • Increases time on page: Readable content encourages users to finish reading, reducing bounce rate.
    • Boosts share rate: Clear content is more likely to be cited and shared, increasing backlinks.
    • AEO-friendly: Concise sentences and clear structure make it easier for AI to extract as Featured Snippets or voice search answers.
    • Matches search intent: General keywords (like "how to...") need more readable content; technical keywords can accept more complex language.

    4) Workflow: Analyze → Optimize → Re-test

    1. Open Readability Analyzer, paste your content (or enter URL).
    2. Check Flesch Reading Ease score, Grade Level, average sentence length, and passive voice ratio.
    3. If score is too low (below target audience level), break up long sentences, replace complex words, use active voice.
    4. Re-test until reaching target score (70+ for general content, 60+ for technical content).
    5. After publishing, use Lighthouse to check actual load speed and user experience metrics.
